LAWRENCEVILLE -- This event was so successful in its first year, vendors ran out of the signature festival item within two-and-a-half hours.
This year, members of the Polish Catholic Apostolate in the Archdiocese of Atlanta plan to more than double the number of pierogi they will have on hand Saturday for hungry festival-goers from 5,000 to 12,000.
After all, it's the Polish Pierogi Festival celebrating the boiled dumplings of dough that will be stuffed with potato and farmer's cheese, sauerkraut and mushrooms or meat.
"We learned that it's a big hit, very popular here," said this year's festival coordinator Elzbieta Gurtler-Krawczynska. "This time we will have more of everything," she laughed.
The festival was founded by Father Marek Ciesla, SChr, former chaplain for the PCAAA who recently relocated to Denver as a fundraiser for the Polish Apostolate, which ministers to Polish-speaking Catholics in the metro Atlanta area. This year's festival will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Parish Hall of St. Marguerite d'Youville Church in Lawrenceville, where the PCAAA meets now under the leadership of Father Piotr Nowacki, SChr.
While the festival focuses on pierogi, those who attend can also sample golabki (cabbage rolls), Polish kielbasa (smoked sausages), roasted pig stuffed with buckwheat and more.
Food tickets are $1 and Gurtler-Krawczynska said eight to 10 tickets would purchase plenty of food for a single person as many of the items require only one ticket.

The festival will also feature a variety of entertainment, from an Atlanta-based polka band to a children's magician. Guests are also invited to bring along lawn chairs or a blanket for programs that will be held outside the Parish Hall.
For those especially enamored with pierogi, T-shirts emblazoned with "I Heart Pierogi" will be available for purchase.
