Woman rescued from Lake Lucerne; man missing

LILBURN -- Firefighters and dive teams had to suspend their rescue efforts on Lake Lucerne due to weather and darkness Friday night, with the potential for a positive outcome for a man who went overboard there getting bleaker by the minute.

Gwinnett firefighters responded to a cove near U.S. Highway 78 just after 7 p.m., with reports that an man and woman fell into the water, a 10-year-old child managing to stay inside the pontoon boat.

Crews were able to rescue the woman using a throw rope bag, spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge said. Never making visual contact with the man, Gwinnett personnel and Dekalb County dive teams suspended efforts about 9:30 p.m.

"It was just simply too hazardous and too dangerous to have divers in the water and firefighters on the water," Rutledge said.

Why and how the three people were on the water remained under investigation Friday night.

Police would stay put through the night to secure the scene, Rutledge said, with emergency personnel resuming recovery operations this morning.

The female victim was evaluated at the scene and released with no injuries, Rutledge said. The male victim wasn't so lucky.

"We had no visual contact with the adult male," Rutledge said. "Witnesses said he was only flailing in the water for a brief time, went under and never resurfaced."
