LAWRENCEVILLE -- Federal stimulus funds will allow Gwinnett to resurface three of the county's most-traveled roads.

Commissioners approved an agreement this week to take $2 million extra in stimulus funds, on top of the $80 million in road projects and $10 million in transit already funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

With a $1 million boost from the local government, the money will be used to resurface portions of Pleasant Hill Road, Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Singleton Road.

"It may very well mean we could do some local roads ... that we wouldn't have gotten to do without this $2 million," Transportation Director Brian Allen said. "This is some money we could utilize."

Earlier this year, the county approved a total of $8.5 million in contracts for road resurfacing.

Officials perform road tests each year to determine the roads in most need of resurfacing, said Deputy Transportation Director Kim Conroy. The extra funds will allow for more miles to be be resurfaced.

Conroy said officials hoped to have bids on the stimulus-funded project soon, so the work can be done before the temperatures turn too cold and the weather gets too rainy.

"Everybody has been scrambling around ... to get these funds used," he said.
