The musical score. The cast. The touching story.

These are a few of Mandy Bruno's favorite things as she takes a turn in the iconic role of Maria Rainer in Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The Sound of Music," coming to Atlanta's Fox Theatre stage this week.

The musical is loosely based on the life of Maria von Trapp, as told in her book "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers."

"She's a pretty extraordinary woman," Bruno said. "I've read her autobiography and Maria was a phenomenal woman and I hope to do her justice."

"The Sound of Music" follows Maria as she leaves her abbey to become governess for a widower's seven children, whom she introduces to the wonderful art of music.

The original Broadway production won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score.

"The music of the show (is) definitely one of my top favorite things," Bruno said. "It's a beautiful score, it's one wonderful song after the other."

"My Favorite Things," the wistful number in which Maria lists things she loves whenever she's sad -- raindrops on roses, bright copper kettles, cream-colored ponies -- happens to be Bruno's favorite song from the musical.

"Maria has a line in the show when she's done singing it -- 'Ah, singing that song always makes me feel better' -- and it really does," Bruno said. "The text of it is so great. It's all the things that we do love, it's so poetic. It makes you feel like a kid, it makes you feel so happy and everything in this world is so beautiful and (reminds you) not to forget that."

"The Sound of Music" will run Tuesday through Aug. 29 at the Fox. Ticket rices start at $25. For more information on the show, call 404-881-2100 or visit www.foxtheatre.org.
