Source: Tyler says he'll be judge on 'Idol'

NEW YORK -- A source close to Steven Tyler said the Aerosmith frontman told the source he will be a judge on Fox's ''American Idol'' next season.

While an official announcement about Tyler has yet to come from Fox and the producers of the top-rated show, the source told The Associated Press on Wednesday, ''there is no reason to refute'' Tyler's account. The source spoke only on the condition of anonymity because the source was not authorized to comment publicly on the matter.

The ''Idol'' judging panel has been in flux with the departure of mainstay Simon Cowell, as well as Ellen DeGeneres' recent announcement that she would not return for a second season.

Dr. Laura to end her radio show at end of year

NEW YORK -- Talk show host Laura Schlessinger said her desire to talk freely without having affiliates and sponsors attacked led to her abrupt decision to end her ''Dr. Laura'' radio show later this year.

Schlessinger said she is walking away a week after apologizing for saying the N-word 11 times on the air while talking to a black woman with a white husband, then saying ''if you're that hypersensitive about color and don't have a sense of humor, don't marry out of your race.''

She apologized a day after the Aug. 10 remarks, but Media Matters for America called for her removal from the talk show. The group encouraged its members to contact show sponsors and affiliates and urge them to drop ''Dr. Laura.''

Mel Gibson's ex appears for custody hearing

LOS ANGELES -- Mel Gibson's ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva appeared for a closed court hearing Wednesday involving custody issues with their young daughter.

Flanked by deputies, Grigorieva did not speak to reporters when she arrived outside the courthouse. She was accompanied by one of her attorneys during breaks in the session.

Gibson did not appear at the hearing, which was closed to the public by law.

A summary posted outside the courtroom indicated attorneys would argue a motion on whether to seize the passport of the 9-month-old girl.
