ATLANTA -- A 27-year-old Clayton County police officer has been charged with accepting bribes to protect drug deals and swiping guns and money from drivers he stopped for routine traffic violations.
Jonathan S. Callahan was released on a $50,000 bond after an initial court appearance Wednesday.
Prosecutors say Callahan was paid at least three separate times between Aug. 6 and Aug. 13 to protect drug dealers who intended to sell cocaine. The indictment also says Callahan stole two guns and money from drivers he stopped in July.
Callahan attorney Page Pate says his client is "surprised" by the indictment but would not say more until he saw the evidence.
