NATION IN BRIEF: Blagojevich guilty on just 1 count

CHICAGO -- A federal jury found former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich guilty on Tuesday of one count of lying to federal agents, and the judge said he intends to declare a mistrial on the remaining 23 counts.

Rod Blagojevich showed no emotion as the verdict was read, neither smiling nor grimacing.

Prosecutors said immediately that they intend to retry the case against Blagojevich and his co-defendant brother, Robert Blagojevich, as soon as possible. The charges had included the accusation that they had tried to sell or trade President Barack Obama's old Senate seat.

Judge James B. Zagel set a hearing for Aug. 26 to decide manner and timing of their retrial.

The verdict came on the 14th day of deliberations. The count on which Blagojevich was found guilty included accusations that he lied to federal agents when he said he did not track campaign contributions and kept a ''firewall'' between political campaigns and government work. It carries a sentence of up to five years in prison.

McKinney Deputy Police Chief Scott Brewer said the man was shouting as the truck became engulfed in flames and the ammunition inside began exploding. The still-unidentified gunman then began shooting toward the police station and there was a ''brief exchange of gunfire,'' Brewer said.

Miss. lesbian sues over tux photo

JACKSON, Miss. -- Another teenage lesbian is suing a Mississippi school district, this time over a policy banning females from wearing tuxedos in yearbook portraits.

Ceara Sturgis' dispute with the Copiah County School District started in 2009, before another lesbian student in another Mississippi school district fought to wear a tuxedo to prom and bring a same-sex date.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday for Sturgis, contending the Copiah schools discriminated against her on the basis of sex and gender stereotypes. Her photo and name were left out of the senior section of the yearbook.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- A South Carolina mother who claimed her children drowned when their car careened into a river was charged with murder Tuesday after authorities said she confessed to suffocating the two toddlers to be free of them and then faking the accident.

Shaquan Duley, 29, told investigators she was distraught about money troubles and unemployment, said Orangeburg County Sheriff Larry Williams. He said Duley told them she killed the boys -- 2-year-old Devean C. Duley and 18-month-old Ja'van T. Duley -- with her hands after arguing with her own mother about how she was raising the children.
