PREP ROUNDUP: Greater Atlanta Christian opens year with two shutouts

SNELLVILLE — Greater Atlanta Christian’s 2010 season got off to a strong start as the Spartans posted a pair of 3-0 wins over Shiloh and Monroe Area on Friday in the South Gwinnett Diamond Classic at Shiloh.

Sarah Armstrong delivered a no-hitter in the opener against Shiloh, striking out six in five innings, while going 3-for-3 with an RBI at the plate. Brianna Stewart also went 2-for-3.

Stewart was the winning pitcher in the nightcap against Monroe Area, surrendering one hit over five innings.


Broncos blank Loganville and Mountain View

SNELLVILLE — Brookwood’s Brandie Jones and Rachel Hill allowed one hit each on Friday as the Broncos shutout Loganville 2-0 and Mountain View 9-0 on Friday in the South Gwinnett Diamond Classic at Brookwood.

Jones (1-0) struck out seven in six innings in the 2-0 win over Loganville. Jessica Neidigh led the offense, going 1-for-2 with a run, while Michelle Ramos went 2-for-2.

Hill (1-0) delivered five innings of one-hit ball with seven strikeouts as the Brookwood offense opened up to beat Mountain View 9-0. Mandy Blackwell led the attack, going 4-for-4 with three runs and an RBI, while Jenny Blackwell tripled, drove in two runs and scored one. Other contributors were Rachel Rhodes (hit, RBI), Taylor Sexton (1-for-1, two runs, two RBIs) and Daniella Ulloa (hit, run).

Collins Hill opens season 2-0

SUWANEE — Collins Hill’s season opened to a strong start on Friday as the Eagles pounded Forsyth Central 13-1 in three innings in the South Gwinnett Diamond Classic at Peachtree Ridge.

Ally LeGette allowed just one hit and one earned run with three strikeouts in three innings for the win, while Mckenzie Halstead led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs and two RBIs.

Brianna Cason added a hit, a run and two RBIs for Collins Hill (1-0) with Chelsea Littlejohn going 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.

Littlejohn also had a double and a triple with three RBIs and two runs as Collins Hill (2-0) beat Eagle’s Landing 11-2. Halstead added two hits with two RBIs, while Amber Hulsey (double, RBI, run) and Christina Parham (hit, two runs, RBI) each had solid games.

North 11, Lambert 1

LAWRENCEVILLE — After having its first game rained out, North Gwinnett’s second scheduled game only took three innings as the Bulldogs topped Lambert 11-1 in the South Gwinnett Diamond Classic on Friday at Central Gwinnett.

North (1-0) pounded out 13 hits, led by a 3-for-3 game from Cara Blenke. Miranda Strother (2-for-2, RBI), Caroline Rodgers (double, two RBIs) and Tori Freedman (hit, three RBIs) each helped, along with Heather Maddox and Mandy Spangler (each went 2-for-3).

Alex McDavid, who also tripled, was the winning pitcher, allowing one hit with seven strikeouts in three innings.

Peachtree Ridge wins two

SUWANEE — Peachtree Ridge notched two wins to start its season on Friday, beating Forsyth Central 8-0 and Eagle’s Landing 7-1 in the South Gwinnett Diamond Classic at Peachtree Ridge.

Sammi Shaffren went 1-for-2 with four RBIs in the win against Forsyth Central, while Chandler Frisbie and Sarah Walker each had a hit and an RBI. Walker (1-0) pitched two innings with three strikeouts and one hit for the win.

Walker picked up her second win against Eagle’s Landing, going three innings with three strikeouts, two hits and a run. Walker also added a hit and two RBIs while Frisbie and Noelle Kendig each went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Sam Pierannunzi finished 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and two runs.

Habersham Central 5, Wesleyan 0

GAINESVILLE — Habersham Central blanked Wesleyan 5-0 Friday night at the Lanier Point Softball Complex.

Caramia Tsirigos was the bright spot for Wesleyan (0-1), collecting two hits in three at-bats.

Hart Co. 2, Hebron 1

GAINESVILLE — Hebron’s Heather Felt gave up just two hits and one earned run and struck out 10, but the Lions (0-1) committed critical errors and fell to Hart County 2-1 in their season opener at the Lanier Point Invitational on Friday.

Savannah Monahan had a hit and drove in a run for Hebron, while Annie Ranus went 2-for-3. The Lions continue in tournament play this morning at 9:30 against Union County.
