LAWRENCEVILLE — A local youth choir is looking to expand its membership of children who enjoy making music together.
The Lawrenceville Community Children’s Choir will kick off its first full season Thursday with an open house and registration to fill its ranks with youngsters interested in learning more about the art and in joining a group active in performing for the local community.
The LCCC was formed in December when a small group of children gathered together to sing carols on the Lawrenceville square. So much fun was had, LCCC artistic director Michele Wright said, that the children wanted to continue to perform together. Since that time, the group has performed for the residents of Applewood Towers in Lawrenceville in March, as guest performers for a local spring dance recital in May and for the grand opening of Kaiser Permanente’s Lawrenceville office in June.
“We wanted to give children the opportunity to come and sing who might not others have the chance to participate in a school choir program or church choir program,” Wright said, “and the opportunity to come and share their gift with the community.”
The season kickoff event will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday and will be held at the Aurora Theatre, the group’s new rehearsal space. The choir is open to children in kindergarten through seventh grade, and no prior musical experience is necessary.
“It’s about giving them that opportunity to come and learn about being a part of a choir program and to help them learn about music and grow musically,” said LCCC’s artistic director, Michele Wright. “We’re hoping, too, that they will form some wonderful friendships and it will give them memories to take on with them for years to come.”
The group is hoping to double its membership from 10 singers to at least 20 through the open house event, which will include a brief session from 5 to about 5:45 p.m. introducing the choir to prospective members and their parents. A special music experience will follow with games and more before children and their families will be invited to enjoy an ice cream social at 6:30 at Rita’s Water Ice on the square.
Choir rehearsals will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. for children in kindergarten and first grade and from 5:45 to 7 p.m. for those in second through seventh grades at the Aurora Theatre, 128 Pike St. in Lawrenceville. Tuition for group members is $25 per month. For more information on the LCCC or the upcoming open house, call Wright at 770-339-4803 or e-mail email@example.com.
