Broncos’ Brown signs to play volleyball at King College
Stephen Brown, a 2010 Brookwood graduate, has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for King College in Bristol, Tenn. He is the son of Dan and Mary Anne Brown.
Brown played club volleyball for the Southern Storm and worked with the Broncos’ girls team as a manager.
Lions’ Sears earns scholarship
Carson Sears, a 2010 Peachtree Ridge graduate, signed a track and field scholarship with Gardner-Webb University.
Sears was the Gwinnett County and Region 7-AAAAA champion in the discus and was second at the state meet. He also won the region title in the shot put and was fifth at state.
Osborne to coach Mt. Pisgah hoops
South Gwinnett grad Jennifer Osborne has been named the head girls basketball coach at Mt. Pisgah Christian School for the upcoming season. She played both basketball and softball at South under her maiden name of Collins, and has coached at both Norcross and Decatur in recent years.
Osborne was the head softball coach and a basketball assistant at Norcross for five seasons, then became the head basketball and softball coach at Decatur. She led a Decatur program that had not been to the state tournament or had a winning record in 10 years to back-to-back winning seasons with a state tourney trip.
Local wins Golf Channel tourney
Eddy Lajara, a 33-year-old Duluth resident, won the Golf Channel’s Amateur Tour event at the PGA National Course in Palm Beach, Fla., this past weekend.
The event, considered a two-day major championship, featured 180 amateur golfers. Lajara won the Jones Flight Major Division with rounds of 84 and 91, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 12th hole at The Palmer Course.
Lajara has won three times in four tournaments on the tour.
Duluth to auction football signed by 23 Heisman winners
Duluth High School’s football program is holding a raffle for a football signed by 23 Heisman Trophy winners, including former Wildcat George Rogers. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased from any Duluth football player or Duluth Touchdown Club member.
All proceeds benefit the Wildcats’ football program. The winner will be announced at halftime of the Sept. 10 home varsity football game.
In addition to Rogers, the other signatures include Mark Ingram, Tim Tebow, Danny Wuerffel, Charlie Ward, Billy Sims, Archie Griffin, Pat Sullivan and Paul Hornung. For more information, visit www.duluthfootball.com.
Marshall headed to long drive finals
John Marshall, media director for the PGA Tour’s AT&T and BellSouth Classic golf tournaments at the TPC at Sugarloaf, has qualified for the RE/MAX World Long Drive finals for the fifth time. The event, broadcast by ESPN in December, is held in October in Mesquite, Nev.
Marshall is a two-time American Long Drivers Association super senior national champion who has finished in the top 10 in the world three times in four previous appearances. He teaches power golf at Steel Canyon Golf Club in Atlanta.
Kentucky track gets Atlanta’s date
SPARTA, Ky. — Kentucky Speedway’s long wait for a NASCAR Sprint Cup date is over.
Stock car’s top series will visit the 1.5-mile oval for a 400-mile race on July 9, 2011. The track will receive one of the Cup race dates normally reserved for Atlanta Motor Speedway.
