SUWANEE — Andy Gonzalez has run the Dennis McCormick Road Race the last 10 years and finally achieved one of his goals on Saturday.
The Collins Hill senior won the 14th annual event hosted by the Eagle’s cross country program with a time of 16 minutes, 18 seconds. “He’s been the man all summer,” Collins Hill cross country coach Andrew Hudson said. “He’s been working really hard. He had a 40 second victory, so that’s very thrilling.” Gonzalez’s win is a nice boost heading into the cross country season, which begins on Aug. 28 with the Stage Races at River Green Park in Duluth. “I’ve worked really hard this summer,” said Gonzalez, who placed 17th at the Class AAAAA state meet last year. “We have the stage races in a few weeks and I feel a lot more comfortable going into the season now.” Collins Hill senior Vicky Winslow was the top female finisher in the race that had 562 registered runners.More like this story
