Samuel Jones Gibson, 84, of Bethlehem, Georgia, went to be with the Lord on August 4, 2010. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Carrie Gibson, and nine brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Nettie Jean Gibson; son: Barry Gibson, Norcross; daughters: Shelia (Jimmy) Fox, Bethlehem; Deanna (Kevin) McBurney, Athens; Deborah Jarrard, Bethlehem; and Sherri (Billy) Pike, Bethlehem; grandchildren: Amy Purcell, David Lee, Lisa Conner, Jamie Watson, Chelsea Norman, and B.J. Jarrard; five great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Gibson joined the Active Naval Reserves at the age of 17 and was stationed on the USS Nevada BB36 during World War II as an aviation electrician. With a talent for plants and landscaping, he started several nurseries after leaving the Navy. There are many properties in metro Atlanta whose beauty is the result of his handiwork. In 1972, he opened Riverside Azalea Farm in Bethlehem, Georgia. Known for his green thumb, especially with azaleas, he loved having his hands in the dirt and was always happy to share his knowledge of plants with others. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. Visitation will be held from 2:00 until 3:00 on Sunday, August 8th, 2010 with a private memorial immediately following in the Stateroom of Tim Stewart Funeral Home, 300 Simonton Rd.
