ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Todd Redmond threw 72⁄3 four-hit innings and walked just two batters for his ninth win of the season as the Gwinnett Braves defeated the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 2-1 on Friday Night at Coca-Cola Park.
Redmond threw a season-high 122 pitches and struck out nine before giving way to the Gwinnett bullpen as the righty got back on track after a rough July in which Gwinnett’s most reliable pitcher won just once on July 3. His strikeout total was the third time he reached nine-plus in a game this year. Second baseman Joe Thurston went 2-for-4 with the go-ahead RBI in the fifth inning, while left fielder Wilkin Ramirez finished 1-for-4 with Gwinnett’s other RBI. IronPigs starter Nate Bump lasted just two innings, allowing one run on five hits. Joe Savery (1-10) earned the loss in relief, yielding what would become the game-winning RBI to Thurston as his only run in four innings pitched. Lehigh Valley’s centerfielder Rich Thompson was 1-for-3 with its only RBI, while right fielder Melvin Dorta was 2-for-4. The G-Braves will go for their third series win in a row tonight at 5:35 p.m. as RHP Brandon Beachy (1-0, 3.60 ERA) is scheduled to face RHP Vance Worley (0-0, 0.66 ERA).More like this story
