SUGAR HILL -- Years in the envisionment, the colors and textures of Sugar Hill's $8.5 million planned city hall complex at the corner of West Broad Street and Temple Drive in downtown began taking shape Monday night.
Precision Planning, the architect designing the crowning jewel of the city's planned $13 million downtown street scape, presented at the City Council's work session six proposed elevations for the three-story, 30,000-square-foot hall.
Each elevation featured copper domes or cupolas with steeples, a look council members felt essential for the period street scape that includes 20-foot-wide sidewalks and double-globe street lamps. Each featured columns front and back, some involvement of stone and brick, and was proposed with street-level entry from the front and stair entry from the rear.
Also presented were interior drawings of the basement and two above-ground stories, including a grand, semi-circular staircase to the hall's marquee feature, city council chambers with seating for about 165 residents on the top floor.
"We're getting real close to where good contractors can start putting together some numbers for steel, stone and brick," City Manager Bob Hail said of plans to soon hire a construction company to build the hall and it adjoining parking deck and town green.
Separately, the council:
* Discussed with residents Richard and Kim Busby of the Brighton Park subdivision a request to extend their patio and pergola roughly four feet into a drainage easement behind their home at 5555 Brighton Rose Lane. The residents acknowledged already having an unauthorized fence within an easement, but claimed it existed before they bought the home. Concerned chiefly about suitable flow of water, the council said it planned to address those fences in the subdivision individually and tabled the Busbys' request until next Monday's monthly meeting.
Sugar Hill's Planning and Development department had recommended approving the request.
* Discussed but also put off until Monday a decision whether to allow residents Brian and Jennifer Lemming to enfence her backyard, also partially in an easement. Planning and Development had recommended conditional approval of the fence at 5444 White Cedar Terrace in the Saddle Tree subdivison, pending the residents' ability to suitably address stormwater flow.
