Garvin earns Cape Cod League all-star nod

Wesleyan product Grayson Garvin, a rising junior for Vanderbilt's baseball program, was selected as one of the pitchers in the prestigious Cape Cod League All-Star Game last week.

Garvin entered the game with a 24-inning scoreless streak, then threw a scoreless inning in the all-star showcase, which was played at Fenway Park in Boston. The left-hander struck out one of the three batters he faced.

Garvin is 5-0 in the Cape Cod League this season, sporting a miniscule 0.70 ERA and boosting his status when he becomes draft-eligible after the 2011 college season.

Johnson makes MLS debut in win

After two appearances in SuperLiga play, Brookwood grad Sean Johnson made his first start in a Major League Soccer game on Sunday night and collected his first win, a 3-2 Chicago Fire victory over the LA Galaxy.

The rookie made a diving save early to maintain a scoreless tie, denying MLS leading scorer Edson Buddle, who had gotten free behind the Fire defense. He gave up two penalty kick goals to Landon Donovan, but sealed the victory with an acrobatic save off a header in the 85th minute.

Chicago's defense also featured Norcross grad Steven Kinney, who made his second MLS start.

Thompkins named to second USA Select team

Wesleyan grad Trey Thompkins, who recently completed training against the USA National Team in Las Vegas, was named Monday to a second USA Select Team.

Thompkins, a rising junior at Georgia, will join nine other college players for Aug. 9-13 practice sessions against the USA World Championship Team in New York City.

Lansmoore's Wilson named GCSL's top coach

Lansmoore head coach Charlene Wilson was recently named the Gwinnett County Swim League coach of the year.

Wilson led Lansmoore to a fifth-place finish at this season's county meet, up a spot from last season, five spots from 2008 and 13 spots from 2007. The team has 185 swimmers, retaining 85 percent from its 2009 roster, and placed 86 swimmers in the top 100 for the county meet. Only 26 of those placers were year-round swimmers.

Suns sign 2nd-round pick Lawal

PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Suns have signed second-round draft pick Gani Lawal, a Norcross grad.

The 6-foot-9 forward currently is playing for the Suns' entry in the Las Vegas Summer League.

Lawal was selected with the 46th pick in the June draft after starring at Georgia Tech.

Phoenix announced the deal Monday.

Thrashers send White to Rangers

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Thrashers have traded center Todd White to the New York Rangers for forwards Patrick Rissmiller and Donald Brashear.

The Thrashers say they will place Brashear on unconditional waivers Monday with the intent of buying out the rest of his contract. Brasher will become an unrestricted free agent if unclaimed.

The 38-year-old Brashear had one assist and 73 penalty minutes in 36 games with New York last season. Rissmiller is 31 and appeared in only two games with the Rangers last season.

The 35-year-old White had seven goals and 26 points in 65 games with Atlanta last season. He signed with Atlanta as a free agent in 2007.
