Prep Roundup: Bronco girls hang on in 1st round

SNELLVILLE -- With four other matches complete and the score tied, it all came down to the No. 1 doubles match.

Brookwood's Keelie Denson and Molly McClintock won with everyone watching to give the Broncos a 3-2 victory over Kennesaw Mountain in the first round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs Wednesday.

Brookwood (17-3) also got singles wins from No. 1 Jordan Johnston and No. 2 Leah Pridgeon. The Broncos advance to play Peachtree Ridge next week.


Peachtree Ridge 3, Roswell 0

SUWANEE -- Peachtree Ridge defeated Roswell 3-0 in the first round of the state playoffs.

Jessica Northcutt won No. 2 singles, while Abby Owens won No. 3 singles for the Lions. Taylor Cohen and Rachel Anderson added a win at No. 1 doubles for Peachtree Ridge (17-0). Peachtree Ridge next faces county-rival Brookwood.

Wesleyan 3, Excel 0

NORCROSS -- Wesleyan won 3-0 over Excel in the first round of the state playoffs on Wednesday.

Megan Kelly won at No. 3 singles, with Julie Rodriguez and Catherine Sutcliff earning a win at No. 1 doubles. Erin Hall and Logan Morris picked up the win No. 2 doubles for the Wolves.


Brookwood 3, Kennesaw Mountain 0

SNELLVILLE -- Grayson Mills and Randy Phillips each earned a point in singles matches to help the Broncos shut out Kennesaw Mountain 3-0 on Wednesday in the state playoffs.

Chris Eastwood and Matthew Shemanski won their doubles match for Brookwood.


Collins Hill 11, Northview 1

DULUTH -- Trey Marksberry threw a complete game, allowed five hits and struck out five batters to help the Eagles take an 11-1 win over Northview on Wednesday.

James Buckelew and Morgan Ownbey each hit a home run for Collins Hill, while Garitt Church and A.J. Harris each went 2-for-3 with a double. Cameron Starling was 2-for-4 with a double and Spencer Horridge was 2-for-3 for the Eagles.

Parkview 10, Berkmar 0

LILBURN -- Parkview (19-4, 9-1) shut out Berkmar 10-0 Wednesday night.

Zak Reinstein got the win on the mound, giving up two hits, two walks and three runs in five innings for the Panthers. At the plate, Matt Olson was 3-for-3 with four RBIs, two home runs, and a double, while Austin Wheeler went 1-for-2 with a home run for the Panthers. Brandon Kregel was 1-for-3 with three RBIs, while Jack Esmonde went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Eric Jordan was 1-for-1 with an RBI for Parkview.

Brookwood 3, Grayson 0

GRAYSON -- Lucas Sims got the win after he gave up six hits, no walks, and struck out eight batters in seven innings to help the Broncos shut out Grayson 3-0 Wednesday.

Brian McGrath was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Nick Moore was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Sims was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Broncos (12-9, 7-3).

Dacula 6, South 5

DACULA -- Steven Williams (1-2) picked up the win after he gave up two runs, four hits and struck out two batters in four innings, as Dacula defeated South Gwinnett 6-5 Wednesday.

Austin Meyer got his first save after he pitched three innings for the Falcons. Offensively for Dacula, Lance Jenkins was 1-for-2 with a home run and a RBI, Oliver Pratt was 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs, Chase Loyd was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two stolen bases while Matt Volkmer went 1-for-2 for Dacula (10-12, 3-7).

Kent Rollins was 2-for-4 with two runs and a home run and Jake Hauser went 2-for-4 with three RBIs for South Gwinnett (5-5).

Mill Creek 6, Peachtree Ridge 5

HOSCHTON -- Johnny McLean went 2-for-2 and drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to help Mill Creek take a 6-5 victory over Peachtree Ridge on Wednesday.

Matthew Grimes (6-1) pitched seven innings and gave up five runs and six hits, striking out 12 batters for the win. Devin Bonin was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Eric Alonzo was 3-for-3 with a run for the Hawks.

Starting for Peachtree Ridge was Jared Walsh, who threw five innings and gave up seven hits, four runs, three earned runs and struck out six batters, but Brandon Harwood got the loss on the mound for Peachtree Ridge (10-12, 5-9).

Brett Polachek went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two home runs, while Preston Johnson was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a home run for Peachtree Ridge. Chris Kelly was 1-for-3 with two RBIs while Chase Macon was 1-for-3.

North 6, Duluth 0

SUWANEE -- Freshman Jordan Brown started his first game and threw a complete game shutout, allowing five hits, a walk and striking out three to help North Gwinnett defeat Duluth 6-0 on Wednesday.

Nick Jones went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, while Seth Bancroft had an RBI single and scored a run, Luke Tindol had an RBI double and Ryan Haygan also added an RBI for the Bulldogs (11-11, 7-7).

Wesleyan 6, Johns Creek 3

JOHNS CREEK -- Kevin O'Leary gave up three runs and struck out six batters in six innings to help Wesleyan take a 6-3 win over Johns Creek on Wednesday.

Offensively, O'Leary had three hits, including his 14th home run of the year. Alex Thykeson had four hits, and Adam Workman and Carter Garrison had two hits apiece for the Wolves (13-7).

Hart Co. 8, Mountain View 6

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Mountain View fell to Hart County 8-6 Wednesday.

Beau Blair got the loss on the mound after giving up nine hits, five runs (three earned), a walk and no strike outs in 41/3 inning. Offensively, Peyton Fore was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Alex Brock went 1-for-2 with three runs for Mountain View.


Grayson 4, Dutchtown 0

GRAYSON -- Mason Flynn got the shutout in goal for Grayson as the Rams defeated Dutchtown 4-0 on Wednesday.

Travis Csere led the Rams with two goals, while Miles Flynn and Adam Kremo each scored a goal for Grayson (9-7-1).

Mill Creek 3, Johnson 0

HOSCHTON -- Brothers Josh and Conner Buckley combined in goal to help Mill Creek shut out Johnson 3-0 on Wednesday.

Taylor Scalera, Chris Eaton and Austin Butler each scored a goal for the Hawks. Tony Baza had two assists, while Matt Levins also had an assist for Mill Creek (9-9).

Wesleyan 1, Marist 1

NORCROSS -- Wesleyan (9-3-1) tied with Marist 1-1 Wednesday.

Wesleyan was down 1-0 with eight minutes to go when Greg Mackenzie scored the game-tying goal off an assist by Austin Delk.

Eric Sunderman was in goal for the Wolves.


Parkview 5, Dacula 1

DACULA -- Parkview took a 5-1 victory over Dacula in the final regular-season game Wednesday.

Kim Spence scored four goals, while Maureen Buff added a goal and had an assist and Kansas Bayly helped with two assists for the Panthers (16-1-1, 8-0).

Grayson 10, Dutchtown 0

GRAYSON -- Erin Griffin set Grayson's school record scoring six goals in one game to help the Rams defeat Dutchtown 10-0, in its final game of the regular season Wednesday.

Miranda McDaniel scored three goals and Angela Hornby added a goal for the Rams (10-7-1).

GAC 9, Darlington 0

ROME -- Greater Atlanta Christian shut out Darlington 9-0 on Wednesday.

Anna Douglas led with two goals, and Rachel Garcia, Madeline Barker, Kayla Puzas, Kelsey Pelletier, Rachel Pew, Allie Blinder and Chelsea Gandy-Cromer each scored a goal for GAC (10-4-1).

Mill Creek 2, Wesleyan 0

HOSCHTON -- Mill Creek completed its season with a 2-0 win over Wesleyan on Wednesday.

Lauren Tanner had a goal and an assist, while Hannah Eison added a goal and Lora Bruce an assist for Mill Creek. Taylor Cornelius got the shutout in goal for the Hawks (13-5).
