Grayson amends alcohol ordinance to allow beer festival, wine-tasting center

GRAYSON -- Something "out of the ordinary" is coming to the city of Grayson.

The Grayson City Council took preliminary steps Monday to allow a wine-tasting center to open within the city limits.

By changing provisions to the Alcoholic Beverage Ordinance, the Council will allow for "boutique wine shops" to operate in the city.

"We wanted to make sure the changes met our needs and theirs," Grayson Mayor Jim Hinkle said.

Troy Nyeste appeared before the council to explain that his new establishment, called Uncorked!, will be a hybrid business model complete with a wine bar, food program and special events room open to the public. There also will be wine-tasting classes and a full kitchen.

Nyeste said this is the group's first location and is expected to open in July or August. No Sunday sales are planned.

In addition, the Council also changed another section of the Alcoholic Beverage Ordinance to allow for issuing to nonprofit organizations a special events license for beer-tasting events in the City Park. This will be used as a fundraiser by the city's Downtown Development Authority.

"This is the type of thing that they are doing in Decatur, and have been very successful at it," Hinkle said, adding that Grayson's beer festival is expected to be held in late September.

In other business, the council:

* Announced that Grayson Day will be held Saturday with the parade to kick activities off at 10 a.m. Parade Grand Marshall will be Lorenzo Washington, who played football at Grayson High School and was a member of the national championship team at the University of Alabama. Washington will be on hand to sign autographs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
