The accolades continue to roll in for Collins Hill wrestler T.J. Mitchell.
The senior was the recipient Wednesday of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award, which goes to the wrestler that demonstrates excellence in wrestling, scholastic achievement, character, citizenship and community service. The award is named in honor of late Olympic and world champion wrestler Dave Schultz. The award comes after a highly decorated senior season for Mitchell. He won his third individual state title this year with a 51-3 record, helped Collins Hill three-peat as dual and traditional state champions and watched his younger brother Drew Ferguson win his first state crown as a sophomore. That success continued at the national level where Mitchell, the Daily Post's co-Wrestler of the Year, won the NHSCA national championship. He's the fourth Georgian to ever win a senior national title. He also helped Collins Hill to a No. 9 national ranking by Amateur Wrestling News, which is the highest ranking ever for a school from Georgia. Mitchell was selected to the Georgia Wrestling Coaches Association's annual dream team, which selects the top wrestler in each weight, and was named to the all-decade team for the 2000s after posting a 214-9 career record with only one loss coming to a Georgia opponent.More like this story
