DACULA -- A Dacula man was jailed Wednesday for allegedly taking a nighttime pot shot at a deer from his Ford F-150, violating several state laws.
Department of Natural Resources authorities arrested Chad Michael Barta, 31, for allegedly firing at a deer about 1 a.m. on Sunny Hill Road at Brown Road in Buford. The area is located off Gravel Springs Road, just west of Interstate 85.
Barta is charged with hunting at night with the aid of a light, hunting from a public roadway and hunting from a motor vehicle. He remained at the Gwinnett County Jail on $3,600 bond Wednesday afternoon.
Georgia law prohibits nighttime hunting except for alligators, raccoons, opossums, foxes and bobcats. Any light used must be carried or affixed to a hunter's helmet, hat or belt.
Laws prohibit sportsmen from hunting wildlife -- except alligators -- from any vehicle or watercraft. Discharging weapons from or across public roads is illegal.
Infractors face misdemeanor charges, fines and up to a year in prison, the laws state.
Deer-hunting season for firearms ended in January, according to the DNR.
