LAWRENCEVILLE -- A Stone Mountain man is charged with felony vehicular homicide in an Interstate 85 crash that killed a man standing outside a tow truck last month.
A Gwinnett police investigation found that Gabriel Verrett, 23, was driving negligently when he struck Riverdale resident Randy Howard, 41, the afternoon of March 20.
Verrett, who was arrested Friday, faces traffic charges in addition to the felony.
Howard was a passenger in a Ford E-350 that had stopped to tow a disabled car in the gore area where Ga. Highway 316 and I-85 south merge, police said.
Witnesses reported seeing Verrett cut across the gore in a 1979 Dodge truck, striking Howard and the disabled vehicle, according to a police accident report.
Howard was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
Verrett was also transported to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
He posted $11,200 bond and was released from the Gwinnett County Jail hours after his arrest.
