LILBURN -- A summer farmers' market within the city limits came one step closer to reality Monday night thanks to a vote by the City Council.
The council voted to approve the temporary closing of Railroad Avenue from Main Street to Lula Street on consecutive Fridays beginning June 4 for the purpose of operating a farmers' market in front of the city tennis courts.
"We're looking at several activities to make our downtown more alive," said Mayor Pro-Tem Johnny Crist during the meeting. There will be 10 fresh produce vendors on site for the 10-week market which will end on Aug. 27. Hours are from 4 to 8 p.m.
In other business, the Council:
* Appointed Norman Nash as a representative to the Lilburn Community Improvement District Board.
* Tabled an ordinance for Precious metals and gems, which, if approved, would coordinate with Gwinnett County's ordinance for tracking and enforcement of these items at pawn shops and gem dealers.
* Tabled voting on establishing reservation fees for using the city tennis courts pending additional input. The fees being proposed are as follows: $350 per season for Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association (plus $30 if 30 percent or more team members reside outside the city); and $50 per home match for adult United States Tennis Association leagues (senior or junior teams, $30.) Individual fees haven't been enumerated.
"We want to make the fees fair for everybody," Crist said.
* Approved the annexation of property at 132 Luxomni Road per request of owner Steward Scruggs.
* Approved the easement allowing Gwinnett County to connect to the sewer for service at Bryson Park.
