Suspect vanishes in SWAT callout

NORCROSS -- A man believed to have shot a woman this morning in a domestic clash was nowhere to be found when a SWAT team entered the victim's Norcross-area apartment.

Police believed the suspect, who was not immediately identified, may have barricaded himself with a gun in an apartment at 6466 West Summit Point, where the shooting had happened, officials said.

The injured woman called police about 4 a.m. from a neighboring apartment in the Ashby at Peachtree Corners Apartments complex, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli. She's expected to survive.

A responding officer "believed that he observed some type of movement behind a closed curtain" in the woman's apartment, and thus called in the Gwinnett County Police SWAT team for safety reasons, Schiralli said.

SWAT members tried to contact the suspect several times, then entered the apartment to find he'd fled, Schiralli said. He's described as a black male, about 5 feet 11 inches tall with a medium build.

Investigators have only a first name for the suspect, which they are withholding as the manhunt continues, Schiralli said.

The victim was transported to an area hospital with a single gunshot wound. Her name is being withheld. Schiralli said she remains in stable condition.

Police believe the incident stemmed from "a domestic-type situation," he said.
