Grenade found in Barrow

WINDER -- What's believed to have been a World War II-style grenade stopped traffic and brought the University of Georgia bomb squad out to Winder on Friday.

Barrow County police responded to a call reporting a suspicious item in a ditch near a property at 1320 Ernest Elder Road Friday at 11:40 a.m. Barrow County spokesman Maj. Todd Druse said. The complainant believed the item was a "pineapple" style grenade like those American troops used in World War II, Druse said.

Deputies arrived and stopped traffic on adjacent roadways, as well as stopping any trains scheduled to come through the area, before contacting the University of Georgia bomb squad.

The squad destroyed the device, and no injuries were reported in its disposal. Barrow County police are still looking into the incident.
