Barrow names new medical director

Barrow County Emergency Services has added an experienced professional to its staff.

Eric Deal, a practicing member of the medical emergency community for 28 years, has been named its new medical director.

"We are very excited to have Dr. Deal sign on with Barrow County Emergency Services as our medical director," interim Chief John Skinner said. "With his many years of experience and knowledge he will be very valuable in working with all of us in staying up with an ever-changing emergency medical field."

Deal, most recently the emergency room director at Barrow Regional Medical Center, has a long and distinguished resume -- he spent 15 years as medical director for Gwinnett County Emergency Medical Services and was the director of emergency medical services at the Atlanta Olympic Village, among others.

Deal's chief responsibilities in his new role will be in oversight, quality assurance, maintaining protocols and training of EMS workers.

"With his energy and experience joining our department," Skinner said, "we will continue to move forward and keep current with the treatment and care of our patients."

Deal's presence, Barrow County spokesman Lt. Scott Dakin said, will help keep all medical protocols in line with current and future emergency medical treatments. In short, his help in training and protocols is aimed at keeping Barrow County Emergency Services current on the ever-changing medical field. His knowledge will help EMS workers to better make the decisions they make every day, ones that are often critical, come with a limited amount of information available and determine the recovery of patients, Dakin said.

Deal, whose wife Sherrie is an emergency department nurse, will ride along with different crews in order to get to know the personnel and the way Barrow County Emergency Services works.
