bert Wayne Shackelford, age 75, of Snellville, GA, Former DOT Commissioner for the State of Georgia, ended his gallant fight with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis surrounded by his family on Tuesday, September 1, 2009. He was a loving and devoted family man who was always committed foremost to his family. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 50 years (Dec. 20, 1959), Anna Nolan Shackelford; Daughter, Carolyn & David Gazda of Athens, GA; Two Sons, Larry & Virginia Shackelford of Marietta, GA, Steven & Nanette Shackelford of Clay Center, NE; 7 Grandchildren, Katie & Taylor Gazda both of Athens, GA; Matthew & Andrew Shackelford both of Marietta, GA, Rachel, Lauren, & Noah Shackelford all of Clay Center, NE; Two Brothers, Lee & Janice Shackelford of Carrollton, GA, Jerry & Belle Shackelford of Lawrenceville, GA; Sister-in-law, Linda McAllister of Lawrenceville, GA; Two Brothers-in-law, Michael Nolan of Athens, GA, Phillip (Sam) Nolan of Jefferson, GA; Numerous Nieces, Nephews, and A Host of Devoted Friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Robert & Effie Virginia Walker Shackelford; Two Brothers, Larry Edward Shackelford & John Harlin Shackelford; Father & Mother-in-law, Col. Hubert Lester Nolan, U.S. Army (Ret.) & Julia Elizabeth Nolan. Wayne Shackelford, born on November 3, 1933 in Carroll County, GA, was a graduate of the old Roopville High School in Carroll County and Berry College in Rome, GA, and also attended the University of Georgia. His dedicated service to the State of Georgia began as a County Extension Agent in Haralson County before moving to Gwinnett County where he dedicated decades to promoting agriculture, livestock and Georgia 4-H. He served as Gwinnett County's Top Administrator in the 1970's. He then worked with Cadillac Fairview Limited and The Conroy Company for 7 years in real estate projects including Town Center Mall and the redevelopment of Phipps Plaza. He served as DOT Commissioner from 1991-2000. He then worked with Gresham, Smith & Partners for 9 years. He was a member of the Lawrenceville First Baptist Church serving on the Building and Stewardship Committees, and member of the Jabez Sunday School Class. He was a former member of the Berry College Board of Visitors, and served as Treasurer of the Georgia Gwinnett College Foundation. He served as President of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), the Southeastern Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (SASHTO), and The Intelligent Transportation Society of America, and was Chairman of the Transportation Research Board. Mr. Shackelford was a lifetime member of the Gwinnett Historical Society. Mr. Shackelford served the Gwinnett County Fair Association for many years being a devoted member of the Livestock Committee and a Board Member since 1971 until his last board meeting a week before he went into the hospital. He was an Honorary Master 4-H recipient, served on the Board of the Georgia 4-H Foundation, and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Foundation in 2007. The Service Celebrating the Life of Wayne Shackelford will be held Saturday, September 5, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. at the Lawrenceville First Baptist Church with Rev. Inman J. Houston, Dr. Lamar Holley, and Rev. David Gilleland officiating. Mr. Shackelford will be placed in state at the Church from 10:00A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow at Gwinnett Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday and Friday from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Members of the Gwinnett County Fair Board and Jabez Sunday School Class will serve as Honorary Escort and assemble at the church at 10:30 A.M.
