3 motorists killed in separate accidents

BUFORD - A motorist died Monday in a single-vehicle accident in Buford, Gwinnett County police said.

It was the third deadly crash in as many days in Gwinnett County.

In Monday's incident, a Toyota Tacoma was traveling south on Shadburn Ferry Road near North Richland Creek Road about 10:30 a.m. when the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a curve, said Cpl. David Schiralli, a spokesman for the Gwinnett County Police Department.

The Tacoma left the roadway and struck a small tree and fire hydrant, Schiralli said. The driver, who was ejected from the vehicle when the Tacoma overturned, died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.

The name of the deceased was not released Monday afternoon, pending notification of next of kin, Schiralli said.

A day earlier, a Stone Mountain woman died after she was involved in a head-on collision on Five Forks Trickum Road near Pounds Road, police said.

Maureen Kalkstein, 53, was traveling east on Five Forks Trickum Road about 11:50 a.m. Sunday when her Ford Escort entered the westbound lane and hit a Chevrolet Monte Carlo head on, Gwinnett County Police Department spokesman Brian Kelly said.

Kalkstein was not wearing a seat belt and sustained serious injuries in the crash, Kelly said. She was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, where she was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Monte Carlo, whose name was not released, sustained injuries that were not life threatening, Kelly said. She was also taken to Gwinnett Medical, where she was treated for her injuries and released.

The exact cause of the crash is under investigation, Kelly said.

On Saturday evening, Loganville resident Howard Depass, 47, was killed in a three-vehicle accident near the intersection of Loganville Highway and Hoke O'Kelly Mill Road, Kelly said.
