Schools to hold Title I fairs

LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett County Public Schools is hosting several informational fairs Saturday for Title I schools.

The Super Saturday Title I Be There Fairs will give parents the opportunity to learn more about the resources available to schools through the Title I program, such as how input can be provided for Title I school plans and budgets. Participants can also receive tips for school success.

"A common misconception is a school becomes a Title I school because of low performance," said Carol Grady, the school system's director of federal and special programs.

Title I schools have a high percentage of students participating in the free and reduced lunch program. Title I allows these schools, which have a high population of students considered to be economically disadvantaged, to receive additional federal dollars to hire more staff or fund special programs.

Sweetwater Middle School principal Georgann Eaton said the fair is for parents and anyone in the community who wants children to be successful in school.

"This is my favorite day of the year," Eaton said. "This is our premiere event. This kicks off the year for not just parents but community involvement."

More than 1,000 people attended the Be There Fair at Sweetwater Middle School last year, and Eaton expects a bigger crowd this year.

Fairs will take place at Sweetwater Middle School, Richards Middle School, Lilburn Middle School, Norcross High School and the Centerville Community Center. The fairs will include a light lunch and fun activities for children.
