Aurora Theatre's new play deals with the end of the world

This blind date could end in catastrophe; not just for the couple involved, but for the entire world.

A doomsday comedy by California playwright Peter Nachtrieb, "Boom" follows journalism student Jo as she meets up with Marine biologist Jules in a subterranean research lab and apartment for a casual encounter, where, off to the side, a mysterious woman pulls levers to manipulate the scene.

"It's sort of like the longest, weirdest blind date you could ever have," said Nachtrieb, who has incorporated multiple themes into his overall plot.

"(It's a) play about creation myths, evolution and everyone's sort of desire to understand where we come from and our origins," he said. "That's sort of a big theme of the play."

"Boom" also tackles the concept of fate.

"The things that happen to us, are they just from random chance or is there some destiny we're all following?" Nachtrieb asked.

Being produced around the country, "Boom" is the first play in a new series presented by the Aurora Theatre, which has partnered with Georgia Gwinnett College to offer thought-provoking, contemporary plays to a younger group of theater-goers.

"I have always enjoyed Theatre in the Square's Alley Stage," said Anthony Rodriguez, Aurora's producing artistic director. "For years, they produced many critically acclaimed regional premieres that provided a voice to contemporary playwrights. We knew we wanted to emulate their cutting-edge series."

"Boom" will be followed up by a second play in the GGC Lab Series set for a March opening. In the meantime, theater-goers can see "Boom" at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and

2:30 p.m. Sundays through Oct. 4. For more information, call the Aurora Theatre at 678-226-6222 or visit auroratheatre.com.
