BUFORD - A 14-vehicle crash closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 985 south of Buford Drive for more than an hour Thursday.
The accident happened at about 3:30 p.m., Gwinnett police said. The roadway, clogged with wreckage and emergency equipment, was reopened at about 4:45 p.m.
Gwinnett Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge said emergency medical personnel evaluated 88 people. Three, he said, were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries and five others were treated and released at the scene.
The cause of the pileup is unclear, but Rutledge said the accidents occurred during a period of heavy rain.
