LAWRENCEVILLE - A Gwinnett County Police Department officer has been released from an Atlanta hospital following an off-duty, four-car crash in his cruiser early Saturday. Officials with Georgia's Department of Public Safety said Officer Kevin Sipple, 36, rear-ended a Ford Explorer at a stop light in his county-issued Chevrolet Impala, triggering a chain-reaction crash about 4 a.m. Investigators believe a medical issue may have contributed to the wreck. No charges will be filed, according to a DPS spokesperson. The crash occurred on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard south of Interstate 285 in DeKalb County. The impact of Sipple's cruiser caused the Ford to spin and strike a Mazda Protege and Chevrolet van also stopped at the traffic light, officials said. Sipple and the Ford driver, a 23-year-old man from Chamblee, were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital with visible but not life-threatening injuries. The driver of the van complained of an injury but was not transported, officials said. Sipple, a senior officer, is a 10-year department veteran, said Gwinnett police spokeswoman Cpl. Illana Spellman. She was unsure Monday how badly the police vehicle was damaged.
