Youth Roundup: GAC's Freeman qualifies for World Cup team

Greater Atlanta Christian senior Will Freeman, the Daily Post's boys high school swimmer of the year last season, has qualified for the U.S. team that will compete in November in the World Cup.

Freeman's 1,500-meter freestyle time of 15 minutes, 25.44 seconds at the Speedo Junior Nationals was a meet record and also the fastest of the three qualifying meets used to pick the U.S. World Cup team.

Freeman is one of only 23 boys swimmers, as well as the only Georgian, on the U.S. team headed to Europe.

The World Cup will be held Nov. 10-11 in Stockholm and Nov. 14-15 in Berlin.


AFU boys win Atlanta Cup championship

The Atlanta Fire United boys U12 Elite won the Atlanta Cup Soccer Tournament over Labor Day weekend, beating top ranked teams from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Mississippi and Tennessee

Three wins in regular tournament play allowed the team to advance to the semifinals, where they won in double overtime. The championship game ended in a penalty kick shootout where the AFU U12 Boys Elite team emerged victorious.

Team members are David Abbott, Kristian Batallas, Andrew Grodhaus, Scott Inderrieden, Billy Johnson, T.J. Josephs, Swezen Kizito, Diego Manrique, Ernando Manrique, Mitchell McCurry, Chris Mikus, Walker Moe, Chato Morales and Adam Shingleton. The team is coached by Keylor Reyes.

AFU U16 girlsclaim Atlanta Cup

The Atlanta Fire United Girls Elite won the U16 Cup Division at the Atlanta Cup Soccer Tournament on Sept. 7.

They defeated the Atlanta Soccer Academy Xtreme 94 Elite 2-1. In the four games leading up to the finals, AFU outscored its opponents 12-0.

Team members are Sophia Becker, Karen Blackburn, Lizzie Brenner, Kailey Bryan, Rebecca Calder, Laura Gillespie, Lauren Harriman, Emily Hirano, MacKenzie Loula, Tessa Lukens, Renee Nance, Lauren Payne, Nicole Ruggieri, Rachael Schmidt, Amanda Schwartz, Lauren Skorb, Tamaya Tompoe, and Rebecca von Bereghy. The team is coached by Mark MacKain and managed by Anne von Bereghy.

AFU U12 girls win title

The Atlanta Fire United U12 Elite girls won the tournament championship at the Atlanta Cup.

The team played up in the U13 Girls B Division and went 5-0, beating the Augusta Arsenal Green 3-0 in the championship game.

The team will play in the prestigious WAGS Tournament in Washington, D.C., in October.

Team members are Sydney Bruns, Casey Couch, Kinsey Dziwura, Clara Gastaldi, Isabelle Grest, Amber Guynn, Stephanie Lee, Emma Manting, Danielle Marcano, Jordyn Missel, Erin Rhodes, Julia Smith, Ambria Shutts and Kayla Thomas. The team is coached by Craig Peter.


Collins Hill 11UEagles win Cumming Summer Sizzler

The Collins Hill 11U Eagles Green travel baseball team won the Cumming Summer Sizzler on Aug. 23 to open their fall season.

The team went 4-1 and outscored its opponents 49-14 as it displayed solid pitching and defense all weekend.

Team members are Austin Jett, Bradley Kallgren, Cade Heil, Cameron Edwards, Christopher Pierce, Christopher Taddei, James Civelli, Jon Wyatt, Mark Flores, Nicholas Topoleski and Tristan Alvarado. They are managed by Ted Kallgren and coached by Tony Flores, Tom Topoleski and Jason Heil.
