New Yerkes building gets LEED certification

LAWRENCEVILLE - The new 18,000-square-foot Clinical Veterinary Medicine Administration Research - CVMAR - building at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center Field Station has been awarded LEED Gold Certification by the United States Green Building Council.

LEED, standing for Leadership in Environmental Design, means the building is environmentally friendly. The certification also means there are now two LEED certified structures at Yerkes.

Among the environmental achievements obtained with the new facility are, 56 percent waster use reduction because of low-flow fixtures, 23 percent energy cost savings, 98.8 percent of construction waste recycled, 27.9 percent use of recycled content and 50 percent use of regional materials.

"It was very important at Yerkes, the Emory community and our neighbors in Gwinnett that our new facility be built in an environmentally conscious way," Yerkes Director Dr. Stuart Zola said.
