Writing own obit a good reflection on what's important

Thank you for the column about Wayne Shackelford and writing your own obit ("Start writing your own obituary," Sept. 9, Page 8A).

A couple years ago when pre-need ordering and paying for my grave marker, I had to decide what to put on it in addition to my name and birth date. Since they would be making it and putting it into storage until needed - I refuse to see the finished work except from below - this was a necessary decision.

You are very correct in your thinking. If we had to write our own obits, we may or may not realize what was or was not really important in our lives. I could just see a teenage girl's marker: She always dressed in the best name-brand fashions.

Maybe a writing assignment like this should be given to high school students to make them think about what really is important in life.
