4 escape house fire
SNELLVILLE - A sleeping family awoke to the sound of a fire in the garage of their Joseph Drive home in Snellville and escaped unharmed early Tuesday, officials said.
Neighbors reported the fire at 12:05 a.m. and fire crews found the two-story structure's garage engulfed on arrival. The fire was controlled about 35 minutes later, said Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge.
The blaze caused heavy damage to the garage and part of the main living space, Rutledge said.
Two adults and two teenagers home at the time escaped without injury after hearing "a loud popping sound," Rutledge said.
The exact cause of the fire is under investigation. The Red Cross is assisting the family, Rutledge said.
Gas leak causes hotel evacuation
NORCROSS - A Holiday Inn Select in the 6000 block of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard was briefly evacuated late Monday after a vehicle backed into a gas meter in the parking lot, causing a leak, officials said.
Seventy five rooms of the eight-story structure were being evacuated when Atlanta Gas Light officials rendered the leak under control about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, said Rutledge. The total evacuation time for guests was about 25 minutes, he said.
About 120 people were temporarily evacuated. No injuries were reported.
