Ready for more: First season gets longer for G-Braves

LAWRENCEVILLE - Confetti shot from the upper tiers of Gwinnett Stadium after Monday afternoon's game.

After the players congratulated themselves on the field, many were handed shooters to continue the visual celebration. Other players tossed balls into the stands and third baseman Van Pope even walked across to the other side of the infield to toss his gloves into the stands.

The celebration came on the heels of a 7-4 win over the Charlotte Knights that ended the inaugural regular season of Class AAA baseball in Gwinnett County.

It was as much a celebration of the season past as the postseason future. The Gwinnett Braves learned Saturday that their season would continue with a first-round playoff match up against New York Yankees' affiliate Scranton Wilkes-Barre.

The playoffs begin Wednesday with two games at Gwinnett Stadium before moving on to Pennsylvania for the final three games of the five-game series. John Halama will start for Gwinnett on Wednesday, followed by Jo-Jo Reyes on Thursday.

The G-Braves made the playoffs as the Wild Card team with an 81-63 record. When in Richmond, the Braves' AAA affiliate won the Governor's Cup from the Wild Card spot.

The International League sets its playoff format in advance, pre-setting the first round meeting between the wild card winner and the winner of the IL North. If the G-Braves win the series with the Yankees they will face either Louisville from the IL West or division foe Durham, which beat Gwinnett for the IL South crown. The five-game championship series begins Sept. 15 and the first two games will go to the winner of the Louisville-Durham series. The final three games would be played in Gwinnett if the G-Braves win in the first round.

Tickets for Wednesday's and Thursday's games are on sale now.
