NORFOLK, VA. - Ambiorix Concepcion swatted away the Gwinnett Braves with a grand slam in the fourth inning, leading the way to an 8-1 Tides win Wednesday night at Harbor Park.
Durham and Syracuse both won Wednesday, meaning the G-Braves fall a game behind the Bulls in the International League South and the Chiefs now trail Gwinnett by 31/2 games in the IL-Wild Card standings. The G-Braves (78-61) got on the board first when Matt Young doubled with one out and later scored on a Wes Timmons single. But a five-run fourth inning, aided by Concepcion's grand slam, put the Tides up for good. Another three runs in the fifth, including a two-run homer by Rhyne Hughes, iced the game. Norfolk (69-68) starter Chris George picked up his second win of the season by holding Gwinnett to just one run on six hits in seven innings. George and relievers Scott Chiasson and Bob McCrory did not allow a walk in all nine innings. Jonny Venters dropped his seventh decision, surrendering eight earned runs on nine hits in 42/3 innings. Norfolk hosts the G-Braves again today for Game 2 of the three-game set. Gwinnett left-hander John Halama (4-6, 4.45 ERA) will face Tides righty Chris Lambert (6-9, 3.85 ERA) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:15 p.m. at Harbor Park.More like this story
