LAWRENCEVILLE -- One part of the U.S. Highway 78 transformation work is complete.

Officials announced the utility relocation work needed to widen the road and add a median has wrapped up.

The work to move water and sewer pipes by Gwinnett County's contractor, Gary's Grading and Pipeline was finished sooner than transportation officials expected, which means lane closures won't be needed.

"Their creative work plan and quick work have helped expedite the widening of U.S. 78," said Georgia DOT District Construction Engineer Randall Davis. "We are thankful for their help."

Officials had planned to close the outside westbound lane of the highway for two weeks, but that closure was canceled.

The $31 million widening project is on schedule for its Nov. 31 completion date, if weather permits, officials said.
