WINDER -- Undercover deputies arrested a Barrow County detention officer Thursday as part of a narcotics sting, an official said.
Jeremy Robert Haney, 30, had been employed for about 18 months as a detention officer, supervising inmates at the Barrow County Detention Center, when administrators received a tip that he was involved in illegal drug activity, authorities said.
Within a day of receiving the tip, deputies and narcotics agents set up an undercover drug buy. Haney bought a small quantity of hydrocodone, a prescription medication and controlled substance, said Barrow County Sheriff's Office spokesman Investigator Matt Guthas
Haney was arrested without incident. He's charged with purchasing a controlled substance, conspiracy to purchase a controlled substance and violation of oath of office, Guthas said.
Though he supervised inmates, Haney did not have regular contact with the jail's general public, Guthas said.
"We hold our employees to the highest of standards," said Barrow Sheriff Jud Smith in a release. "(We) will not tolerate any criminal activity whatsoever."
Haney remains in police custody. He's been held in an undisclosed location, Guthas said.
