NORCROSS -- Undefeated and top-ranked Grayson clinched its second straight Region 8-AAAAA football title Friday night, rolling past winless Meadowcreek 56-0.
"We're real excited about becoming the region champions," Grayson head coach Mickey Conn said after the game. "I can't say enough about our coaching staff and our kids. We've worked our kids hard, and they continue to be there for us."
Grayson is 9-0 overall and 7-0 in the region, while the Mustangs fall to 0-8 and 0-6.
Running back Devin Gillespie scored two touchdowns for the Rams on 8-yard runs in the first and second periods, while kicker Austin Clark was perfect with seven extra points, and one field goal.
Grayson had 351 yards rushing and 15 first downs with Ean Pemberton leading the pack with 181 yards on 16 carries. The Rams mounted an insurmountable 35-0 lead at the half, and never let up.
"Our kids just like to play football," Conn said. "I'm proud of the offense and the defense."
He said it was the defense's goal to score a touchdown, and they did -- Robert Nkemdiche recovered a fumble for a Ram TD in the third quarter.
Pemberton got the Rams on the scoreboard first with an electrifying 72-yard scamper around left end, and Clark added the point after with 4:54 left in the first period.
Jesse Hogan blocked a Mustang punt later in the period, as the Rams scored the first of two safeties. Korey Jones' 16 yard TD run and Gillespie's second score followed, before Clark kicked a 35-yard field goal with only seven seconds left in the first half.
Terrius Wilson continued the Ram scoring in the third period, taking it in from the 3-yard line. Ryan Braswell ended the Rams' scoring in the final quarter with his 4-yard TD run.
