Prep Roundup: Buford wins two to advance to Columbus

BUFORD - Buford defeated Walnut Grove 9-1 in six innings in Game 1, and shut out the Warriors 9-0 in five innings Friday to advance to the Class AA state softball tournament in Columbus.

Karly Fullem (10-2) got the win in the first game, giving up only two hits and striking out 11 batters.

Lexi Overstreet went 3-for-3 with a single, double, triple, three RBIs and a run. Samantha Ramey was 1-for-3 with a double and two runs. Whitney Wolfe, Kallie Case and Chelsie Thomas had an RBI hit each for Buford.

Melissa Dickie (8-1) pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts for the Wolves in Game 2.

Buford jumped on Walnut Grove early, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Alysha Rudnik went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs. Wolfe went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Fullem was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Ramey and Thomas each had two hits for Buford (21-4).

The Wolves play again on Thursday at noon in Columbus.


Collins Hill advances in state playoffs

SUWANEE - Collins Hill knocked Dacula out of the Class AAAAA playoffs with 5-0 and 4-1 wins on Friday night. Game 2 was decided in a tie-breaker and Collins Hill advanced to the state tournament in Columbus with the victory.

Kayla Floor (16-1) pitched a complete-game shutout, giving up four hits and striking out four in Game 1. Offensively, Christina Parham was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, while Chelsea Littlejohn went 2-for-3 with a run for Collins Hill.

In the second game, Floor picked up another win, after she threw 42/3 innings in relief and gave up four hits and struck out seven batters.

Brittany Roley scampered home to score the go-ahead run in the tie breaker. Mckenzie Halstead was 1-for-2 with a solo home run and Sammy Lenahan was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Collins Hill will play at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in Columbus.

Parkview beats Etowah, Kell

MARIETTA - Parkview took a 3-2 win over Etowah and beat Kell 9-3 on Friday.

Summer Rose pitched a complete game and improved her record to 15-3. Krista Gustafson went 2-for-4 with a game-winning three-RBI single in the top of the seventh to give Parkview the lead against Etowah. Caitlin McClure was 2-for-3 for the Panthers.

In the second round, Parkview's Amanda Chambers picked up the win after striking out 10 batters in seven innings. The Panthers had 16 hits as a team. Greer Freeman went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and McClure was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Gustafson was 2-for-3, Rose finished 3-for-5 and Sarah McFall was 2-for-4 for Parkview.

The Panthers play again today at noon to decide who advances in the state playoffs.

Grayson 4, Harrison 1

KENNESAW - Grayson beat Harrison 4-1 in Game 3 of its playoff series Friday and is set to host Duluth at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. today. Game 3 of the series, if necessary, will follow.

Kanani Cabrales (14-7) struck out five batters, gave up three hits and picked up the win for Grayson. The Rams had 11 hits as a team. Savanna Berkhiser went 3-for-3, while Hayley Downs and Rachel McElroy each had two hits and an RBI. Cabrales had two hits and two RBIs and Taylor Denton had two hits for Grayson.

Duluth 2, Lassiter 0

MARIETTA - Asia Hilliard and Casey Nellums came through with key RBIs as the Wildcats topped Lassiter 2-0 in Game 3 of their first-round Class AAAAA state tournament series Friday.

Grace DeLorenzo smacked a one-out double in the second inning - Duluth's only hit of the game - to get the offense started. Elanna Worthy reached on an error before Hilliard and Nellums brought the runs home with sacrifice bunts.

Jeanie Perrucci got the win for the Wildcats, who will play at 1, 3 and 5 p.m. today at Grayson in the second round of the playoffs.

Hebron 3, Landmark Christian 2

NORCROSS - No. 4 seed Hebron beat top-seeded Landmark Christian 3-2 on Friday and is set to play Providence in the second round of the state playoffs.

Megan Griffin went 2-for-3 with two runs. Kara Adams was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI, and Brooke Crosby scored two RBIs for the Lions. Megan Dixon got the win for Hebron (13-7). Hebron faces Providence at 11 a.m. today.


Killian Hill wins last game of the season

LILBURN - Killian Hill took out Bible Baptist 25-23, 25-23, 17-25, 25-23 in its last game of the season Friday.

Ashley Peterson had 10 blocks and six kills, and Jeannie Crane had 22 blocks. Kaitlyn Rygh helped with 19 serves and 68 assists, while Madeline Tewes had 70 passes and seven kills. Nicole Bullard had 22 serves and 59 assists for Killian Hill (13-2).
