Hispanics urged to take part in Census

NORCROSS - Officials used a recent Hispanic Heritage celebration to spread the word to the county's Spanish speakers the importance of participating in the upcoming Census.

The cultural event at the Norcross Human Services Center gave people an opportunity not only to enjoy Latin food and entertainment, but to learn about the data-collection campaign.

Gwinnett County has the highest concentration of Hispanics in the metro area, according to previous Census data, and participation by Latinos could have implications for the county's federal funding.

"We saw the opportunity to step out of the shadows to help Gwinnett," Gerson Vasquez, senior partnership specialist from Census 2010, said of the event. "The Census 2010 has an impact on each and every one of us. It is important for funding, it's safe and easy. This is the first time the census will only be 10 questions which will not be intrusive. No social security number and immigration status are required to participate."
