Richard Thomas, Jr.

Richard H. Thomas, Jr., age 85 of Lawrenceville, Georgia died October 9, 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Doris Cheek Thomas, grandson Jonathan Thomas, brother Jerry E. Thomas, and parents Rube and Sadie Thomas. He is survived by two sons and daughter in-laws: Brent and Janet Thomas, Hoschton, Mike and Liz Thomas, Lawrenceville; Grandsons: Keith Thomas and wife Kara, Buford, Josh Thomas, Dustin Thomas and wife Ashley, Lawrenceville. Brother and sister in-laws: Nathan Holman and Becky Thomas, Conyers Frances Thomas, Loganville and Geneva Cheek, Dacula. Nine nephews and three nieces, several cousins. A native of Gwinnett County, R.H. was a State Farm Insurance Agent in Lawrenceville for 43.5 years. He was one of thirteen charter members of Central Baptist Church in Lawrenceville and one of three active deacons at organization of the church in 1958. He was an active member until present. Prior he was a member of First Baptist Church in Lawrenceville where he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior in 1947. R.H. graduated Salutatorian from Grayson High School in 1941. In 1946 he graduated from Piedmont College with a Masters in Chemistry and a Minor in Math. He went on to obtain a Masters degree in Education from the University of Georgia in 1949. A veteran of World War II, R.H. served for 30 months in Africa, Italy and France as a medical technician in the 36th General Hospital. He taught high school Chemistry and Math at Lawrenceville and Sugar Hill two years each and was principal at Sunny Hill for one year. Starting with a baseball team in 1948. R.H. worked with youth sports for at least 21 years, including church leagues, Little League and Dixie Youth. For several years he was affiliated with basketball and helped organize the Gwinnett County Basketball Officials Association. He was an avid Braves fan since 1966.
