2nd officer named in probe

LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett police on Friday named a second officer who's resigned after allegedly stealing county funds used in narcotics investigations.

Narcotics investigator Officer Vinnie Hardin has resigned in lieu of being terminated as an internal probe continues, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli.

Fellow narcotics investigator Lt. David Butler resigned in July after being confronted with the allegations. Schiralli said Friday the two cases are not related.

Investigators with the professional standards unit initiated the probe into Butler's alleged misdeeds after receiving an internal complaint regarding the theft.

Butler was a 24-year veteran of the department, last assigned to the Central Precinct in Duluth, where he served as watch commander.

"The investigation is still active, criminally," but both cases involve the misuse of county funds, Schiralli said.

Schiralli could not offer a timeline as to when investigators might press charges, he said.
