LILBURN - Berkmar had something to celebrate on homecoming. Quavious Marshall helped see to that.
The senior quarterback threw three first-half touchdown passes as the Patriots won their first game of the season, beating still winless Meadowcreek 33-6 in a Region 8-AAAAA game moved up to Thursday night.
Marshall, operating Berkmar's no-huddle offense efficiently, spread his passes around. Three different players had TD receptions, the longest a 65-yard score by Hoderick Lowe late in the first quarter.
Xavier Briggs caught a 21-yard TD pass and Jordan Murry teamed with Marshall for a 28-yard score, both in the second quarter.
Marshall, who has eight TD passes on the season, was 19 of 25 for 201 yards passing as Berkmar snapped a nine-game losing streak. The Patriots hadn't won since defeating Meadowcreek last season. The Mustangs have lost 15 games in a row.
Berkmar, 1-3 in Region 8-AAAAA and 1-5 overall, has the difficult task of playing at No. 1-ranked Grayson next week, but at least the Patriots will go into the game with a victory.
Meadowcreek, 0-4 in 8-AAAAA and 0-7 overall, is off next week. The Mustangs lost 10-7 to Berkmar last season. This meeting, however, wasn't close after the first quarter.
Meadowcreek held Berkmar without a first down on the Patriots' opening two possession. But the Mustangs gave up touchdowns four of the next five times Berkmar had the ball, the only stop coming on an interception by Tydrell Wright.
The Patriots, taking advantage of three Meadowcreek fumbles, led 26-0 at halftime. After Marshall's three TD passes, Duchein Williams raced 45 yards on a reverse for a score.
The Mustangs fumbled again on their first possession of the second half and Berkmar took advantage for a quick TD. Marquis McNeil scored on a 5-yard run just 80 seconds after intermission.
Meadowcreek's TD came on a 22-yard run by quarterback Lee Spann on the first play of the fourth quarter. Spann completed three passes to Mrzel Mehick on the drive, which came after Berkmar was stopped on a fourth down at the Mustangs' 45.
Elijah Mitchell had a 44-yard punt return for Berkmar in the fourth quarter, but the Mustangs held despite the Patriots having a first down at the 9-yard line.
Meadowcreek played without two-way senior standout Lavon Hooks, who had to sit out after being ejected in last week's 64-15 loss to Brookwood.
Berkmar has beaten Meadowcreek in the past six meetings and leads the all-time series 15-5.
