BUFORD - Authorities have identified the man and woman who died from gunshot wounds Saturday night on West Rock Quarry Road near Thompson Mill Road.
At about 7 p.m., Gwinnett County police responding to a suspicious activity call found Jimmy Watts, 53, of Tiger, dead, prompting them to call in homicide investigators. Police said 67-year-old Margie Gibbs, of Columbus, was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center where she later died.
According to police, the unidentified caller told dispatchers there were two people lying on the ground, and that both had blood on them. When officers arrived, police said, Watts and Gibbs were lying on the passenger side of a maroon Toyota Tacoma. According to police, a handgun was found on the ground a few feet away from Gibbs.
Police said investigators are still trying to determine the motive for the shooting and whether anyone else was involved.
Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli said an official ruling of the incident will be announced after the medical examiner has completed both autopsies.
The investigation is ongoing, he added.
