Walk for diabetes Sunday

JOHNS CREEK - More than 1,000 participants have already committed to put their soles to the streets walking for a cure for diabetes.

Additionally, more than $200,000 has been garnered through local fundraising efforts, which will culminate Sunday in the North Metro Atlanta Walk to Cure Diabetes in Johns Creek.

As one of only four walks in Georgia, organizers for the event hope to make a large dent in the statewide fundraising goal of $4 million.

A total of more than 2,000 walkers representing local corporations, families, schools and community organizations are expected to gather at the State Farm Technology Park in Duluth on Sunday afternoon and Gwinnett residents can lace up their walking shoes and join the walk, which is hosted by the Georgia chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Cisco Systems.

"The recent statistics are staggering and reveal that health care expenditures surrounding diabetes cost our nation more than $132 billion," said Michael Veysey, with Cisco. "These are the reasons we are committed to raising money for the cutting-edge research that JDRF funds. By working together, we can make a difference."
