Volunteers awarded for service

LAWRENCEVILLE - Two local American Cancer Society volunteers recently received awards for their service.

Linda Halbman, who coordinates the society's Road to Recovery program, and Phil Hoskins, Leadership Council chairman, were honored with division awards of excellence for mission delivery and volunteer leadership, respectively.

"To say that we are proud is a huge understatement," said staff assistant Elaine Harvey.

Harvey said the South Atlantic

Division encompasses seven states and the District of Columbia. Of approximately 350,000 volunteers, eight were selected.

"Having two of these winners come from Gwinnett is quite an honor," Harvey said. "It speaks volumes about the quality of volunteers this community produces."

Hoskins said he is honored to be recognized and pointed to a team effort as the reason for the organization's success.

"In Gwinnett County, we have a great partnership between volunteers and staff," he said. "Under the leadership of Randy Redner, Gwinnett County is a national leader in supporting the ACS mission to eliminate cancer as a major health problem."

Hoskins called Halbman a "driving force" - literally - behind one of the services provided to Gwinnett cancer patients. The Road to Recovery program provides free transportation to patients and their families to and from treatment facilities.

Halbman said it's her pleasure to serve patients who are so appreciative and deserving.

"I am extremely honored to be given this award," she said. "I have a strong desire to see that no one goes untreated ... I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with a wonderful group of volunteers who help make this happen."

According to the ACS, the mission delivery award is given to those who are "instrumental in support of activities with a significant impact" on one or more of the division's mission delivery outcomes.

The leadership award is presented to a nominee who "demonstrates exceptional leadership" and whose efforts significantly impact and advance the society's strategic goals.

"I would say that Linda and Phil perfectly exemplify these characteristics," Harvey said.
