Devices that save water, energy go tax free today

LAWRENCEVILLE - Water- and energy-efficient appliances are a little more affordable this weekend, as the state has suspended sales tax on those items.

The savings apply to purchase of ENERGY STAR-qualified or WaterSense-labeled products that

cost $1,500 or less per item.

"Purchasing appliances and products with ENERGY STAR and WaterSense labels helps create a culture of conservation in our state," Gov. Sonny Perdue said. "The ENERGY STAR and WaterSense Sales Tax Holiday is a perfect opportunity for Georgians to save money at the cash register and on their water and energy bills."

The holiday begins today and lasts through Monday.

Officials estimate energy-efficient products such as compact fluorescent light bulbs, can save between 30 percent and 80 percent more energy, while WaterSense products could save an average household about $170 a year.

Information about the products can be found at www.energystar.gov or www.epa.gov/water

sense.
