The strength of Gwinnett County cross country was on display last weekend at two regional meets.
Grayson's Kirubel Erassa placed second in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships South Regional in Charlotte, N.C., and the Snellville XC Club, which featured members of Brookwood's state championship team, won the NXN Southeast Regional Championships in Cary, N.C.
Tyler Anyan helped the Snellville XC Club to the championship with a second-place finish in 15 minutes, 20 seconds. Tommy George (16:01), Zack Robinson (16:08), Sean Brennan (16:15), Michael Giuliano (16:19), Carter Hewitt (16:35) and Jackson Wearn (16:40) were also on the team.
Snellville XC Club scored 109 points to beat Columbus of Miami and finish ahead of 28 of the top teams in the Southeast. The team will compete in the national championship meet this weekend in Portland, Ore.
Erassa ran a time of 14:43 in the 5K event to place second at Foot Locker, taking second behind Craig Lutz (14:34) from Highland Village, Texas. The time was a new personal record for Erassa, who won the Class AAAAA state championship this season and was named the Daily Post's Runner of the Year.
The top 10 boys and girls from Saturday's race qualified for the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships National Finals on Dec. 12. The race at Morley Field at Balboa Park in San Diego, Calif., will also feature the top 10 runners from the Northeast, Midwest and West regionals.
