Friday night's Class AAAAA quarterfinal football game between host Grayson and Newnan will be aired this week on CSS as the Comcast and Charter Nissan High School Football Game of the Week. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

Dacula's Pratt signs with Young Harris

Dacula senior Oliver Pratt has signed a letter of intent with the Young Harris College baseball program.

Pratt, a third baseman and pitcher, has started the past two seasons and has a career .319 batting average and 2.88 ERA.

Mecheso, Winslow shine at XC nationals

Florida State cross country runner Amanda Winslow earned All-American honors with a time of 20 minutes, 44 seconds in the 6K at the NCAA championships on Monday. The Collins Hill grad helped the Seminoles to a national runner-up finish.

Berkmar grad Girma Mecheso was 24th in the men's race for Oklahoma State.

Gladiators sign Hurley

The Gwinnett Gladiators announced Monday that they have agreed to terms with defenseman Sean Hurley. Hurley has appeared in two games this season with Las Vegas, recording no points and no penalty minutes.


Mauer wins American League MVP

NEW YORK -- Joe Mauer became only the second catcher in 33 years to win the American League Most Valuable Player Award, finishing first in a near-unanimous vote Monday.

The Minnesota Twins star received 27 of 28 first-place votes and 387 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Yankees teammates Mark Teixeira (225 points) and Derek Jeter (193) followed, while Detroit's Miguel Cabrera drew the other first-place vote and was fourth with 171 points, one point ahead of the Angels' Kendry Morales.

Mauer became the second Twins player to win in four years, following Justin Morneau in 2006.

Kimbo Slice to make UFC debut Dec. 5

LAS VEGAS -- Kimbo Slice will make his official Ultimate Fighting Championship debut on Dec. 5 in Las Vegas.

Slice is the former strip-club bouncer who became an Internet sensation for his widely viewed street fights. He found wider stardom on CBS last year while fighting for the defunct EliteXC promotion.

Earlier this year, he signed with UFC and agreed to be a cast member on its popular television show, ''The Ultimate Fighter.''
